Ivory heads

Post by Robinr »

Dear All,

Please could somebody post a scan of an ivory head? (Or heads).

I have heard about it and read about it but have no visual understanding. Did it really only appear during 1820 and 1821?

Any helpful information would be very well received.

Thanks a ton in advance,

Robin

Robon as requested, scans of ivory heads in different stages.

Stamps were not yet in circulation in 1820 and 1821 so I am assuming that you mean 1840 to 1841, but no ivory heads appear most commonly on the 1d red which didn't come into being until 1841 onwards so the date goes far beyond what you imagine.

Ivory heads are quite common (as seen from the rear of stamp) and can still be bought relatively cheaply.

Hope this helps.

The above should read, "but no, ivory heads appear most commonly.........."

The comma makes all the difference to the meaning.
