QV 1d red

Post by alexiosp »

Does anybody know when the 1d red became invalid for postage?

I cannot be sure but I believe a date around 1890 has been reported. I have seen a 1d red used as postage (and accepted) on a cover sent 1908.

I just ran across a price list from Aug 82 for a "seldom seen" cover bearing a 1d. Venetian Red dated 29 June 1915. The list said that was the last day of validity for QV stamps. I can't verify the accuracy of that statement. However, I do have a penny red plate 86 single stamp cancelled May 21 (19)11. Hope this helps.

I quote from a paper read by HRH The Prince of Wales on 4 March 1904 to a meeting of the Philatelic Society, London (now the "Royal" of course), viz:-

"...a notice in the London Gazette for 19th April 1901, by which, for the first time in the postal history of the country, certain stamps were demonetised. It was intended to leave available only th dies of current stamps; viz, the 1d of December, 1881 (the 16 dot 1d lilac)..."

Hope that answers the question

I just found this in SG Specialised Volume I, p. 36:
"Invalidation: Line-engraved issues were declared invalid along with some early surface-printed stamps from 1 June 1901. Those Victorian issues not included were demonetised later on 1 July 1915, also included with the stamps were revenues and postal stationery not demonetised in June 1901."
This is consistent with what Petrod found but not the dealer's list. I think that June 30 would have been the last day of validity of that stamp. Postal service would have been offered on June 30, a Wednesday that year. Was June 30 ever a bank holiday?

Your eyes must be sharper than mine, Bob. I had a quick look through Volume I and missed that bit! It would be interesting to know what was the source for Gibbons' information.

Going by the content of the Gazette notice of April 1901, I think it it is pretty safe to assume that the 1d Venetian red was demonetised that year along with the line-engraved 1d's.

Incidentally, in my experience it has never been particularly uncommon for quite old, invalidated stamps to be used illegally and not noticed, or at least not penalized, by the British Post Office.

To the best of my knowledge 30 June has never been a bank or public holiday in Great Britain, although I am open to correction on that.
