Invalidation of Line Engraved issues

Post by JohnB »

I've followed with interest the entries concerning invalidation of Victorian issues. I have a postcard franked with a halfpenny SG 48 postmarked 10 May 1911. I had assumed it was demonetised along with other QV issues in 1915. My query is did SG 48 appear in the Gazette list of 1901 ?

Since the line-engraved halfpenny stamp was not mentioned in the small list of exceptions to the demonetization, I guess it also ceased to be valid in 1901. As I said before, in my experience it is not uncommon to find invalidated stamps used well after their "use by" dates on GB covers at all periods, quite a few not noted by the authorities, nor penalized.

For the record, there were 11 items on the demonetisation of Victorian postage stamps in various numbers of Volume 40 of the GBJ. (Don't know if the specific queries were addressed, though.)
