Penny reds

Post by Filip1943 »

I seem to have collected a large number of penny reds and I wonder if someone could advise me the best way or a good way of setting these out on my album pages rather than in straight lines.

I have tried some variations but having just acquired 2 collections of 2 plates I would like to consider other options

Thanks

I reconstructed a sheet by arranging the corner letters in order as they would have been printed
maybe the A row on 1 page
etc see how they fit

Good idea thanks but what about the actual layout on a page

All in straight lines or some sort of variation? I am a bit new to this!

the sheets in order were 20 rows of 12

see if 5 sets of 12 per page (maybe 4 if looking cramped)

Hi KHM,
Plate 11, is one of the easy plates to determine. There are many decent publications to help you.I have used Stanley Gibbons Specialised , the Penny Black Plates by Edward B Proud, amongst many others.
The main feature of this plate is the very short or missing ray at the 7 0 clock position on the right star at the top of the stamp. There is also a frame break in the same left top corner on
nearly all of the top eight rows that is letters A A to H L. Except letters GE AND G F.
Some of the letters are distinctive like the broader short E, the square footed J , short footed L.
This plate is also printed in a distinctive oily colour but this may be variable i would rather use more reliable characteristics. There is no O flaw on this plate.
I hope that this is of some help.
