Edinburgh Postal Training School

Does anybody have information on items cancelled at the Edinburgh Postal Training School that have started appearing on eBay?

Some of the items strike me as strange. For example there is a £1 Wilding Castle which was withdrawn in 1970 cancelled on a 1979 Rowland Hill PHQ card. Also there are King Edward VIII stamps similarly cancelled.

They strike me as odd to say the least.

I have looked at these and interestingly no dates appear in the cancel. I seem to remember the actual Edinburgh Postal Training School cancellor and cachet appearing a while ago on ebay. So buyer beware.

at this time dealers are getting desperate to make money from anyone, anyway.

Ebay is full of fakes and philatelicly inspired items esp. Channel Islands.

You must know what you are doing or stay off sites like ebay

I did a piece on these for the last Newsletter, so you're not the only one they strike as strange. Unfortunately I didn't have any more specific information than you do -- i.e. it was purely based on observations of the things -- but there are very many bizarre combinations!

If the actual cachets have got out onto the market as maneanut says, then basically anything of this sort has to be assumed dodgy unless proved otherwise.

Thanks for your response. I should pay more attention to the Newsletter!

It is interesting we have independently reached the same conclusion.

I will include two Wilding Castles in my presentation on 29 October so members can see examples first hand. I have labelled the items as jokes or poor forgeries.
