"THWAITE" straight line handstamp

Post by alexiosp »

Hi all,

could someone give me some info on the straight line "THWAITE" handstamp? I presume that it is Thwaite in Suffolk. I would like to know period of use and rarity rating according to the British County Catalogue of Postal History (Willcocks / Jay).

I do have the latest Collect British Postmarks, but no dates of use are shown.

Attached is a photo of a 1791 EL from Thwaite to Knightsbridge.

Thanks!

Hi Alexios

W and J (2nd edn) record two Thwaite stamps. The first (presumably yours) is not given any dates, but the second (a mileage mark) is 1819-44.

The earlier THWAITE (yours) is rated G on a scale of A to H+

Best wishes, Mike

PS. The early THWAITE mark is described as 45 x 5 mm in black.

Many thanks Mike, much appreciated!

Actually, I measure the mark on my cover as 41 x 6, but then again I guess that some (if not many) measurments in the county catalogues are not very accurate.

All the Best, Alexios
