Postmark Query

Post by JohnB »

I have a K E VII halfpenny (SG 217) with a circular postmark approx 25mm diam bearing in the centre the letters I.S with a smaller letter J above. Three short but heavy vertical bars below I.S and one either side of the J.
I have not seen this before is it a form of Newspaper Branch cancel or something else ? Does anyone know. Sorry I can't give a scan

This sounds like Stitt Dibden's Type 87, which he said was used in the Inland Branch from about 1905 to about 1911. He described it as being 24 mm and having letters above the I.S. See the scan below from his book: Newspaper Branch Cancellations, published by the Postal History Society, 1971, which reproduced his article entitled Newspaper Branch "Killers" from its Special Series No. 1, 1957. There might be more recent publications giving more information and dates. Hope this helps.
