Collect British Postal Staionery
by Alan Huggins & Colin Baker

A SIMPLIFIED LISTING OF BRITISH POSTAL STATIONERY 1840 TO 2007

This publication is designed to introduce the subject to collectors in a simplified way while retaining the established approach to the classification published previously (A. K. Huggins, British Postal Stationery, A Priced Handbook of the Postal Stationery of Great Britain, Great Britain Philatelic Society, 1970). The listings have been updated and to facilitate identification each section includes the relevant stamps and formats which are illustrated in colour.

This new listing of British postal stationery covers all issues from 1840 to the present day, including Post Office, Official and private items. It is illustrated in colour throughout with the lists clearly set out in a logical format so that collectors can easily identify items in their possession. The 14 page introduction gives a definition of, and a brief history of the development of postal stationery, with details of how the listing has been constructed. In most cases prices are given against items for mint and used condition, unless there are too few items on the market for realistic prices to be given.

£30 Size A4, casebound with jacket, 164 pp. colour illustrations throughout. Published 2007.

Discovering Seahorses by Bryan Kearsley

AN IMPORTANT NEW WORK ON THE KING GEORGE V HIGH VALUE SEAHORSE ISSUES

• Many important discoveries resulting in new major plate varieties for the catalogue
• Nearly 300 pages and over 380 illustrations (some in colour) to help the collector with these varieties
• Details of the sheets printed by each plate and the identity of those used for the overseas Overprints.

Ever since they were first issued some 90 years ago, the King George V Seahorses have been admired by stamp collectors. Yet many of their technical and philatelic aspects have remained puzzling. Much written about them is incomplete or contradictory; little was known of their printing plates or their many varieties. Over time, this has encouraged a number of myths to grow unchallenged.

A product of six years’ research, Discovering Seahorses is the first comprehensive study of this issue. Based on contemporary documents and proof sheets held in our national museums and archives, together with material from private collections and dealers’ stocks, the book relates the story behind the creation of the Seahorses, and the many changes they experienced during their production over a period of 26 years.

For the first time, all their plates and the quantities printed are identified. It places the numerous shades in context and illustrates many new and significant plate varieties that are expected to be included in the next Specialised Catalogue. Its detailed scope covers the Great Britain issues and all the overseas Overprints, and includes check-lists of the shades and the paper, watermark and printing varieties.

This is the complete guide to all the Seahorse issues and will enable collectors to enhance their collections with discoveries and information previously unknown.

The Line-Engraved Halfpenny by W. de L. M. Messenger

A critical analysis of the production of the first halfpenny stamps of Great Britain

THE LINE-ENGRAVED ½d POSTAGE STAMP OF 1870 is one of the most-loved and widely-collected of Victorian postage stamps. Information about this popular stamp appears in numerous handbooks and catalogues covering British philately. However, this is the first book specifically about the ‘bantam’ ½d, its development, its design, its printing, and its history. The author has drawn on the many published sources and has added his own research, including from the records in The National Archives at Kew. In this new book he presents the information in a usable way and corrects a number of errors in past writings. For the student of this stamp this will be an essential handbook, but much will be found to interest the more general collector of the Victorian line-engraved issues.

Price £15 ISBN 0-907630-18-9. Size 170 x 240 mm, soft covers, iv + 52 pp. Published 2005.

The Post Office and the Colleges by Vincent West

This book describes the relationship between the Post Office and the Oxford and Cambridge colleges from 1871 to 1887, the period when the colleges issued their own stamps and postal stationery. Initially the Post Office were tolerant of the college posts and their stamps, but eventually suppressed them. This untold postal history tale of conflict between establishments, revealing the personalities of the individuals on both sides, is based upon unpublished material in the Post Office archives.

"University challenge . . . a labour of love . . . top class research and an intriguing tale . . . something akin to an episode of a highly rated TV detective show, such as 'Morse'"Stamp Magazine, March 2005.

". . . an intriguing story, the petty bureaucracy of both parties being worthy of 'Yes Minister'"British Philatelic Bulletin, March 2005.

The Telegraph Stamps and Stationery of Great Britain by Peter Langmead & Alan Huggins

This book presents for the first time a comprehensive account of all of the telegraph issues of Great Britain; their background and their usage.

Peter Langmead’s renowned collections form the basis for the sections on the Private Telegraph Stamps and Forms, Post Office Telegraph Stamps, and Military & Army Telegraph Stamps and Forms.

Alan Huggins has revised and expanded the Telegraph Forms listing in his British Postal Stationery to produce the section on Post Office Stamped Stationery.

'Rainbow Trials' by David Rowse

THE PENNY BLACK postage stamp was an extraordinary creation. It was the first stamp that ever portrayed the effigy of a reigning Sovereign, and except for two minor instances which were quickly detected, the stamps were never forged. This is the story of how the colour was changed from Black to Red.

Early in May 1840 Rowland Hill was advised that several red Maltese Cross cancellations had been removed by the public from the black stamps. Hill was immensely alarmed and immediately instituted a series of trials to establish satisfactory printing and cancelling inks. The so-called 'Rainbow Trials'

The published work is hardbound and illustrated in full colour. It includes much previously unseen material, which has in the main been scanned directly from the original items, to ensure as accurate as possible colour reproduction. In total there are 180 illustrations, 146 of 'Rainbow' items, including 77 from the Royal collection.

Joshua Bacon 1790-1863 by David Rowse

JOSHUA BACON was the key figure in the printers Perkins, Bacon. Yet extraordinarily little is really known about him. This is the story of Perkins, Bacon - the company behind the printing of so many of the early postage stamps and other high-security documents. This new 74-page hardback book, illustrated in colour and black and white, has interest for all collectors of the stamps of Great Britain, the British Empire, and several foreign countries who had their early stamps printed by Perkins, Bacon & Co. It will also interest collectors of banknotes, labels, security documents and share certificates.

This is a valuable background for those who collect Line-Engraved stamps of Great Britain and the British Empire.
