Recorded Delivery / Signed For Rates from 1961

First Day of service, 1st February 1961, commercial usage with the sender having
apparently forgotten the new service initially and written "Registered"

This service was introduced on 1st February 1961 as a low-cost alternative to registration, intended for letters that contained no valuables but for which the sender required a signature on delivery. It was (and is) available for any class of inland mail both before and after the move to two-tier post. Recorded Delivery packets were treated as ordinary mail in transit, so no compensation was available beyond that available with ordinary mail.

The name changed to "Recorded Signed For" on 8th May 2003 and "Royal Mail Signed For" on 2nd April 2013. In the 29th March 2016 update it was also listed under the rubric of "UK Confirmed" (with prices given as a combined price for various classes of mail) and offered £50 compensation as opposed to £20 for normal mail. From 2017 the fee for parcels has been lower.
