Help please. Penny Red Plate 123 and 126 on same stamp!

Has anyone seen this before please? On left hand margin plate 123 is shown but on the Right Hand margin of the same stamp plate 126 is shown!

Plate 126 apparently does not exist? I have magnified the 2 sides of the stamp and although damaged its interesting. Forgery perhaps? Hand stamp error? I dont know. Any help advice appreciated. Thanks.

Having looked at your attachment of the damaged penny red Tony, I decided to produce my own magnified images of this stamp in question, and came to the conclusion that both sides show the number 123 and not as you have suggested.

The stamp appears to be very badly damaged and personally I would discard it into the refuse bin !!!!

However, you did come up with a statement of the fact that plate 126 was never used, the same goes for plate 128.

Does anyone therefore have the knowledge as to why this was so ?

I would refer you to Seymour’s “Stamps of Great Britain - Part II” Quote - “ Plates 69, 70, 75, 77, 126 and 128 were rejected owing to defects or unsuitable spacing for perforation”

Thanks for the update petrod.

It would appear that these plates were not up to scratch, so to speak  WM
