Dinner Menus of KEVII 2/6d

Post by Andy Donaldson »

I’ve been doing a little research into the dinner menus to be found on the back of the King Edward VII 2/6d (original 1902 De La Rue printing on Ordinary Paper). These were produced for two 1902 dinners. One by Phillips (when he owned SG) and the other by Beckton (the Manchester based philatelist). See attached images of the reverse with the printed menus.

I thought I knew which was which (I just have these loose stamps) but have seen auction lot descriptions saying each is the other as well as the way round I believe them to be. I have also seen images of both attached to Phillips menu cards (so one is obviously a concoction).

Nothing has ever been written about them in the LP or the GBJ that I could find and the only info I could find on-line were a couple of past auction descriptions/images.

Does anyone have more information on these? Do you have an example (preferable on an original menu card)?

I am trying to establish with 100% certainty which menu is from which dinner.
The reason for each dinner.
How many attended each dinner (to establish how many of each menu stamp existed at the start).

Any information gratefully received.
