First day of issue

Post by Tony »

I recently obtained this via eBay :
Downey Head N1 002.jpg
The vendor gave no guarantee as to whether it was genuine, and since I only paid £6, I have no quibble. I just wondered whether any members felt that the balance of probability is that the hand written inscription is genuine and accurate, merely out of curiosity ?

Many thanks for any thoughts.

Tony,
Firstly is the pair of the watermark, die, shade etc. of the stamps when first issued? Then are the marginal markings of first issue? Sometimes a person who enhances an item forgets or is ignorant of such basics.
I can't answer those questions, but if the answer is yes, then my gut reaction to your question is a "Yes". In part my answer is governed by the thought that someone who wanted to enhance the item would probably want to keep the writing clear of everything that was printed.

Thanks, Winston - yes, everything else checks out - Die 1a, Crown watermark, but unfortunately (from my limited knowledge) no plate markings.

Cheers
