Downey Head Shades

Post by Tony »

Apologies if this has been raised before - only been collecting for about three years ! I have a small selection of Downey Heads, but i am having great difficulty in deciding between the various shades. Dealers have been as helpful as they could be, but i have noticed that on occasions two (or more) different stamps purchased as the same shade differ quite dramatically. I have the Gibbons colour chart, but that does not seem to help. Could any member offer advice on the best way to identify shades (other than experience and a large collection of reference copies !).
Many thanks
Tony

Hi there Tony!

I had a wonderful reply prepared to accompany my scan however it mysteriously vanished into thin air.

Now I have to step away for work for a few hours, but I will return in a bit to try to recreate the literary genius that is now floating around cyber space....

If you have a chance to scan and post the 1d. Downey's you are working on, please do so. We can never have enough eye candy!

Have a good one,

Many thanks, Skilo - I am already envious just looking at your scan ! I'll try to get some 'eye-candy', but be patient - this kind of endeavour is somewhat new to me !

Further to previous posts, I have been advised by experts that sorting used DH stamps by shade is almost impossible, due to action on the ink by water, chemicals, etc., so I gather I'm on a loser here. Thanks for the offers of help, anyway - I'll just have to accept defeat in this instance !
