I recently obtained this via eBay : The vendor gave no guarantee as to whether it was genuine, and since I only paid £6, I have no quibble. I just wondered whether any members felt that the balance of probability is that the hand written inscription is genuine and accurate, merely out of curiosity ? Many thanks for any thoughts. Tony |

Tony, Firstly is the pair of the watermark, die, shade etc. of the stamps when first issued? Then are the marginal markings of first issue? Sometimes a person who enhances an item forgets or is ignorant of such basics. I can't answer those questions, but if the answer is yes, then my gut reaction to your question is a "Yes". In part my answer is governed by the thought that someone who wanted to enhance the item would probably want to keep the writing clear of everything that was printed. |

Thanks, Winston - yes, everything else checks out - Die 1a, Crown watermark, but unfortunately (from my limited knowledge) no plate markings. Cheers Tony |
