N18 Color Shades. A Survey.

The initial printing of the Red - brown stamps was undertaken at Somerset House in 1912. Two Controls were used for printing. The first control used was the Wide setting 4 mm between the letter A. and serif of 1. The close setting being 1 and 3/4 mm respectively.

Examples shown N18.1 Red - brown. Wide Spacing.
N18.2 Pale Red - brown corner pair. Close Spacing.

The first major shade change came about during 1916 when N18.11 the listed Deep Yellow - brown shade appeared. From this point on the shade spectrum for study begins.
N18.11 deep Yellow - brown printed under control H16.
Shades of Orange - brown appeared during 1917.
N18.15 Variation Deep, Dull Orange - brown printed under control J17 Plate 3c. Perf type 2.
Also during 1917 a Deep Yellow - brown shade appeared printed under control J17 Perf Type 2a and deeper than the listed shade for 1916.

During the final years from 1922 through 1924 shade varieties continued with Chestnut being the predominant shade. However, during 1922 the listed shade of Very Deep Red - Brown was produced under Plate 35.

From Pale to Deep Shades, I have attempted to give some idea of a color survey of the humble Red - brown shade taken from my own collection. As new additions are added so, the diversity extends.

N18.13 Deep Chestnut 1923.

Variety N18p Frame Break base between E and H Row 20.2
