ROYAL CYPHER WATERMARK ON BISTRE BROWN

Advice please - SG shows watermark W14 with a picture showing three differing positions - to the left, centre and to the right - is this pictorial representation correct, the reason being in the specialised catalogue it says types two and three are known to SG395/96 Bistre brown yet I have all three positions very clearly shown, if the placements are correct as I suppose - enlightenment please.

Mike, I do not think the types have anything to do with whether they are left, middle or right. All watermarks at that time were still to be found in different places. The differences are in the shape of the letters but it would certainly help if there were better real pictures of these in the literature somewhere!

Type I is not recorded on the 1/- basically because it was only in use 1912/1913 and the first printing of the 1/- was the SH C.13 and only with Type II available August 1913.

cheers
James

Hi - thanks for the reply, I must admit the positioning theory did not seem to be correct but as the picture shows no apparent differences between them I was not entirely sure, just blitzing through GV and wondered, on Machins now then back to EDVIII - all go.
Thanks again for the response - Mike

Thanks James - the problem in all these cases is having a clear and identifiable watermark, I do have a really good selection of very fine used but either the postmark from overleaf confuses or there is just not enough clarity but on the very brightside two were just enough to be able to identify the type by the V size and position.
I owe you - Mike

Mike, I tried to take photos of three stamps with these three watermark types, viz.:

3d A.12 type I
9d G15 type II
9d N19 type III
