Help with Plating Please

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the Forum and I am looking for some help!

I have been collecting for over 30 years now having inherited my Fathers collection.

Still to this day I am finding little packets with stamps in to sort through.

I collect to fulfil my SG Windsor Albums and have focused mainly on Volume II - to date.
I am now endeavouring to try and Plate and look at shades of the Volume I era and without knowing more it is daunting!!

I attach a Penny Star which is of bluish colour, under the microscope I can see it has clearly been re-cut (right side shows it was a 'B' and Now letter 'F', whereas I think left side may of been an 'I' and is now an 'N'.

Would anyone be able to tell me more? I have tried using the book 'repairs of the 1840 One Penny Plates' by J.W.M. Stone. I think it may be originally Plate 1 or 5.

Many thanks
Russell

Welcome to the world of plating - a study that you can take as far as you want to or as far as time permits!

You say that your stamp has been repaired, but, to my eye, it does not seem to be. The check letters were punched into the plate by hand, and there are very few errors that required correction - the most famous being stamp BA of Plate 77, where the A was omitted when the plate was first used. It was corrected later.

If you are referring to the little connection between the bottom serifs of the F, these look to me to be related to the inking of the plate for this particular sheet. A feature of the Line Engraved stamps is that the plates did wear significantly over time and this caused the prints to become fainter and generally paler with the passage of time. Many plates were repaired, as you have seen by looking in 'Stone' However, in most cases, it was the whole design that wore and so the whole design was 're-entered' on to the plate in an effort to restore the engraving to a depth similar to when the plate was new. Your stamp does not look a particularly worn impression.

Stone is quite an advanced book. Do you have the 'basic' plating books that will assist you in identifying which plate this stamp has come from? If not, I will be happy to recommend some, depending upon the range of stamps you want to plate and how deep you want to go into the subject.

I am attaching scans of stamps lettered NF from the range that I reckon your stamp is from, Plates 46-90. I hope this helps.

Regards

Mike Williams

Hello Mike,

Thanks for a quick response and explanation, "I could of swore" it had been altered!

I was hoping it would help fund some further purchases!
Without a Scope you would not of noticed it.
As for reading material other than what I have seen on here and 'Pennyreds.co.uk' website I have not ventured further. This was my main reason for joining to ask the experts!
'Recommend away' ,,,

Thanks for the help

Hi Rustical
Your stamp looks like Plate 108, i cannot find any reason why it isnt this plate.
The check letters appear to match with the imprimatur exactly.

SETARO26/Enrique,

Have you looked at the GBPS Plating tool here https://www.gbps.org.uk/tools/plating/

You might be able to do plate them yourself.

But if not, any scans you provide (sorry, I don’t plate for money) would need to be much better quality than the 1d Black one you have given. Even though it is of such poor quality, and I can’t make out the lettering, I can see the “O” flaw, so that narrows down the plates it can come from.
