The 3d & 6d overprints of 1883.

Post by Wilding Mad »

As an inquisitive sort of person I am a bit puzzled regarding the following : I would like to know as to why two stamps that was already printed with denominations of 3d & 6d was overprinted with identical amounts, I could have understood it if the values had been different, but they was the same !
Can anyone give a reasonable explanation as to why these overprints of the 3d & 6d was produced in 1883 ?
Thanks, WM.

It would appear that I have now found the answer relating to these particular overprints, the like of which can be found on the 'GB Overprints Society' web site that gives the explanation : The large overprints were produced in order to identify the stamps and their denomination in poorly candle lit Victorian offices.

This site deserves a recommendation as it is full of useful information !
