1940 centenary 2 1/2d sg 483

G'day from sunny Sydney.

I have been collecting GV1 for many years and have been able to almost complete all the known cylinder blocks from the commemorative sets.
The 1940 centenary issue has been of interest as the cylinder of the 2 1/2d from the 4 both dot and no dot seems to have only been present in the specialised catalogue for around the last 4 editions. The value has gone up and up.
I have managed to find a block of 6 with 4 dot and a pair 4 dot but never seen a no dot.
I would be interested to ask if anyone out there is able to shed any more light on this cylinder and if they might have or seen any of these.

regards

Owen

Finally managed to upload pics and sorry previous title was the 2d not the 2 1/2d

Hi Owen, well done on finding the 2 blocks on the dot cylinder. Cylinder 4 is a VERY scarce cylinder to locate anything on - even cylinder singles. Like you, I only have an example from the Dot cylinder and have never seen any No Dot examples for sale ( & I've been looking for years. ) !!!! I've not really came across any real idea as to how it is so scarce, perhaps there was damage to the cylinder and it was taken out of use after a very short print run?

Thanks very much for your message. Good to hear that someone else has also not had much luck with this cylinder.

Recently I saw on eBay a block of this issue with HL Palmer signed on a piece of paper below. Now I know he was the eventual designer of these stamps. I had a look through my book and found these cylinder blocks with HLP signed on the selvedge. The signature looks very similar to the one sold on ebay. Have you ever seen this before? I know Dulac used to sign his stamps at exhibitions as I have a lovely festival block signed by him twice. What do you think?

regards

Owen

Hi Owen, designers regularly visited exhibitions and signed around the margins of sheets for sale to collectors. I too have a corner block of the Festival issue signed by Dulac and a matching block signed by Abram Games. I also hold several other signed items from the George 6th era. I have not seen any Centenary items signed before, so regret that I can't comment on them.
