Hi All

With regard to the Coronation Pre Cancellations on the 12th May 1937, I am trying to ascertain how many different Post Offices Pre Cancelled on the 12th. The ones I have are:

BISHOP BRIGGS - GLASGOW (probably the most common)
LASHAM - ALTON HANTS
THE HYDE - N.W.9 (although not very clear cancellation)

If you have different one can you please list them

Thanks and Stay Safe

Hi Mike,

Good luck with your project. Here are the post marks on the relevant covers that I have:

LONDON, 6:15PM, 11MAY 1937, H

HIGH WYCOMBE, 8:20PM, 11 MAY 1937, BUCKS
(There were two different envelopes used, with two different typewriters. My guess is that a whole pane - possibly without the cylinder block - was used. At least 100 covers!)

PENZANCE, 6 PM, !! MAY, 1937, CORNWALL

(Illegible, illegible,)12 MAY, 1937, BIRMINGHAM

MIDLAND TPO, *, 12 MY, 37, GOING SOUTH

BISHOPBRIDGE, 7 - AM, 12 MY, 37, GLASGOW

ST SAMPSON'S, *, 12 MY, GUERNSEY CH IS

VILLE AU ROI, GUERNSEY, *, 12 MY, 37, CH.IS.

UP SPECIAL, 12 MY, 37, T.P.O.

HAMPTON COURT, CAMP, 12 MAY 37, (Illegible)

THE HYDE COLINDALE AVENUE, *, 12 MY, 37, N.W.9.
(Registered)

AUDLEM, A, 12 MY, 37, CREWE. CHESHIRE

ST.JAMES ST.BRIGHTON SUSSEX *, 12 MY, 37, 1

Ditto (Registered)

BUCKINGHAM PALACE, *, 12 MY, 37, SW1

CHURCH ROAD PORTSMOUTH, 12 MY, 37, HANTS.

And here is the prize cancellation of them all...

MANCHESTER, 10-PM, 4 MAY, 1937, X

And finally, for your delectation, a letter from the General Post Office to a Mr Grant, dated 1st June, 1937"

Sir, With reference to the latter part of your further letter of the 1st of June, I am directed by the Postmaster General to say that it it known that a certain number of Coronation stamps were sold before the authorised day of issue, despite the precautions taken to prevent such a happening.

The Postmaster General. however, is satisfied that the irregularities were the result of a genuine misapprehension on the part of the officers concerned.
I am sir, Your obedient servant...

Nice letter. Pity nobody told the PMG about the Morrisons at High Wycombe!

Hi Robin

That is a fantastic collection and presents a good selection of Post offices. The 4th is really impressive, never heard of one that early.
Thanks for your reply
