George VI Insured Letter

Post by Theo »

Hi,

another question about an insured cover from me. Can anybody tell me which amount was covered by the insurance of 1s11d in November 1945?

Thanks in advance

Hi Theo -- sorry I didn't notice this before!

It's an inland insured cover, which basically meant paying a higher registration fee than the basic, so the registration rates (from 1921) were as follows:

3d basic for up to £5 cover
4d for up to £20 cover
then 1d per additional £20 cover to a maximum of £400.

These rates increased by 1d on 1st May 1949 and by another 2d on 1st May 1952.

So your 1/11 rate cover is the maximum possible, for £380-400 worth of compensation. A very nice item indeed, both as a piece of KGVI postal history and from the point of view of registered mail!
