Waterlow and Sons History Lecture - 3rd September 2019

Post by admin »

Following the successful lectures at Guildhall Library in 2017, an annual lecture following their format was created. The History lectures will focus on the lives and careers of members of the Stationers' Company.

Waterlows was founded in 1810 by James Waterlow, initially producing lithographic copies of legal documents at Birchin Lane, London. By 1852, they were printing stamps and James’s sons, Alfred, Walter, Sydney and Albert, joined the business. After a family dispute in 1877, the company split and was later reunited in 1920. Waterlows also printed bank notes and was involved in the Portuguese Bank Note Crisis of 1925.

Sir Sydney Waterlow became an Alderman in 1863, Sheriff in 1866, he was knighted in 1867, became Lord Mayor of the City of London between 1872 and 1873 and was created Baronet of Fairseat in 1873. He was well known for his philanthropy and donated the gardens of his house to the local council, which were opened to the public in 1891 as 'Waterlow Park'. Sir Sydney Waterlow was also Master of the Stationer’s Company.

Sir William Waterlow was made 1st Baronet of Harrow and Weald, also a Master of the Stationers' Company, Alderman of Cornhill Ward, Sheriff between 1928 and 1929 and was Lord Mayor between 1929 and 1930. He was MD of 'Waterlow and Sons' and was involved in the Portuguese Bank Note Crisis.

The lecture will include the links between the print industry, the Stationers' Company and the City.

The speaker will be Chris Waterlow.
