Has anyone ever tried to plate the 2s6d value from the corner trim marks

Lord Spens and Gerry Bater tried to link various marginal markings to plates.

Unfortunately they did not know how many plates there were or the numbers. Now these are known and the perforation guide markings have been linked to specific plates it is now possible.

However you will need the corner trim marks and the perforation guide markings on the same pane.

Another way is to examine the existing printing plates and by a process of elimination the markings could be linked to specific plates

A booklet by The Lord Spens and Gerry Bater was produced in 1990 covering these issues with an Addendum in 2001 by Gillham and Tregurtha. These were published by The G.B. Overprints Society and are now out of print and scarce but if you contact me direct at emmjayo@talktalk.net I may be able to get a copy of each for you but they are priced at £36 and £18 respectively.

I guess you have read the series of articles by Peter Shaw in GSM, particularly the April 2010 edition.

Just to sort out the 2s6d plates:

46725
This was the original plate which has been scrapped. Printings from it can be checked to the registration sheet at the BPMA which was printed from this plate

46936 was not a printing plate but a master plate

46959 and 46992
These were printing plates taken via the master plate 46936 via alto plate 60555. The plates were identical.

Alto plate 60555 still exists at the BPMA which will give the marginal markings for 46959 and 46992

47001, 47145 and 47316
The printing plates still exist at the BPMA

It is therefore possible to check the marginal markings on all plates.

I have photographs of all existing plates and the registration sheet. They will not be any use for very accurate measurements.

Great, I have ordered the registration sheets from the archives and plan a trip to the archives. It's kind of hard to get research from Canada. Thanks for all the help.
