Improvement of correspondence. List of new cross roads

His Majesty's Post-master General, for the further Improvement of Correspondence, having been pleased to order, that Letters and Packets shall for the future, be carried six Days in every Week, instead of three as at present, between London and the several following Towns, viz. Caxton, Hundington, Stilton, Stamford, Coltesworth, Grantham, Newark, Tuxford, Worsop, Bawtry, Doncaster, Howden, Rawcliff, Thome, Hull, Ferrybridge, Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Tadcaster, York, Easingwold, Thirsk, Northallerton, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, Barnards-Castle, Brough, Penrith, Keswick, Cockermouth, Whitehaven, Carlisle, Daventry, Coventry, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Huthersfield, Wiggan, Chorley, Preston, Garstang, Lancaster, Burton, Kendal, and Appleby.

And likewise for the further Improvement of the National Correspondence, to erect and establish the following New Cross Road Posts, namely, betwixt Newcastle upon Tyne, Whitehaven and Carlisle, through Durham, Darlington, Barnards Castle, Brough, Appleby, Penrith, Keswick, Cockermouth, and Workington, by which the Correspondence of those Towns with each other, as well as with the Great North Road, and with Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury, Thetford, Lynn, and Norwich, may be carried on six Times a Week.

Also a new Cross Road Branch betwixt York and Manchester, through Tadcaster, Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, and Rochdale, by which the Correspondence of that Part of the great North Road lying North of Ferrybridge, with all Parts of Lancashire, may likewise be carried on six Times a Week; And their Correspondence with Cheshire, Staffordshire, Birmingham, and Coventry in Warwickshire, considerably quickened and improved.

Also a new Cross Road Branch betwixt Sheffield and Doncaster, through Rotherham, by which the Correspondence of Sheffield with Hull, and all Parts of the Great North Road as well as with Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury, Thetford, Lynn, and Norwich, may be carried on six Times a Week.

Also a new Cross Road Branch from Sheffield to Rochdale, through Barnsley, Huthersfield, Elland, and Halifax, by which means the Correspondence of Sheffield, Chesterfield, Mansfield and Nottingham, with Manchester, Warrington, Liverpool, and all Parts of Lancashire, may be carried on six Times a Week; and their Correspondence with Cheshire, Staffordshire, and Birmingham in Warwickshire, considerably quickened and improved.

Also a new Cross Road and Branch from Derby, through the Peacock Inn to Chesterfield, by which the Correspondence of Derby with Chesterfield, Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, an all the great North Road (North of Doncaster) as well as with Barnsley, Huthersfield, Halifax, Rochdale, Manchester, Warrington, Liverpool, and all Parts of Lancashire, will be considerably quickened and improved.

Also new Cross Road Stages from Ferrybridge to Wakefield, from Wakefield to Leeds, and from Ferrybridge to Leeds, by which the Correspondence betwixt all Parts of the North Road, South of Ferrybridge, as well as Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury, Thetford, Lynn, and Norwich, with Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Rochdale, Manchester, Warrington, Liverpool, and all Parts of Lancashire, may be carried on six Times a Week. And the Correspondence of all Parts of the North Road, North of Newark, with Cheshire, Staffordshire, Birmingham, and Coventry in Warwickshire, will be considerably quickened and improved.

Also a new Cross Road Stage betwixt Cambridge and Caxton, by which Means the Correspondence of the great North Road, as well as all Parts of Lancashire, with Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury, Thetford, Lynn, and Norwich, may also be carried on Six Times a Week.

Also a new Cross Road Stage betwixt Nottingham and Newark, by which the Correspondence of Nottingham, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Loughborough, Leicester, Harborough, and Northampton, with the great North Road, and with Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury, Thetford, Lynn, and Norwich, may likewise be carried on Six Times a Week.

Also a new Cross Road Stage betwixt Appleby and Kendal, by which the Correspondence of Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Carlisle, Penrith, Appleby, and all Parts of Cumberland and Westmoreland, with all Parts of Lancashire, may be carried on Six Times a Week; and their Correspondence with Cheshire, Staffordshire, and Warwickshire, considerably quickened and improved.

Also a new Cross Road Stage betwixt Birmingham and Coventry, by which the Correspondence of Coventry and Daventry, with Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Sheffnal, Shrewsbury, Stone, Namptwich, Chester, Warrington, Liverpool, Manchester, and all Parts of Lancashire, Westmoreland, and Cumberland, may be carried on Six Times a Week; and their Correspondence with Northampton, Harborough, Leicester, Loughborough, Derby, and Nottingham, considerably quickened and improved.

And also a new Cross Road Branch betwixt Salisbury, Portsmouth, and Gosport, through Stockbridge and Winchester, by which the Correspondence of Portsmouth, Gosport, Winchester, Southampton, and the Isle of Wight, with Plymouth, Exeter, and all Parts of Cornwall, Devonshire, and Dorsetshire, as well as with Bristol, Bath, Devizes, Melksham, Bradford, Trowbridge, and Salisbury, will be considerably quickened and improved.

And having also been pleased to order, that the Mail betwixt Chesterfield and Manchester, shall for the future pass from Tidswell thro' Buxton, to Stockport, instead of passing thro' Chapple in Frith, as it does at present;

Public Notice is hereby given, That these several additional Conveyances, Improvements, and Regulations, will commence on Monday the 6th of July next.

And whereas great Numbers of Letters have hitherto been privately collected and delivered as well in these as in other Parts of the Kingdom, contrary to Law, to the great Prejudice of the Revenue of the Post Office; Notice is likewise hereby given that all Carriers, Coachmen, Watermen, Wherrymen, Dispersers of Country News-Papers, and all other Persons whatsoever, hereafter detected in the illegal collecting, conveying, or delivering of Letters, will be prosecuted with the utmost Severity.

N. B. The Penalty is FIVE POUNDS for every Letter collected or delivered contrary to Law; and ONE HUNDRED POUNDS for every Week this Practice is continued.
