Re: 5d Machin Cyl.7 v Cyl.10

Hi Clive

The 6d value is a different kettle of fish - plenty of shade variations there, fugitive ink and so on, I recall doing a 16 page display/exhibit on the 6d., but not sure if it was recorded anywhere.

Best of luck

Tony

Re: 5d Machin Cyl.7 v Cyl.10

Hello Clive I disposed of my £sd Machin collection several years ago, so cannot realistically help you with your enquiry. I do not recall seeking to differentiate between cylinders 7 and 10 in the 5d value from isolated specimens say, even if I did I would need to look at the actual stamps. I certai...

Hi Robin, many thanks for your kind comments. You have indeed raised an issue frequently discussed in the Newsletter in the past. At the risk of boring you to insensibility, can I refer you to a Post in this General Queries category way back on 10 July 2009. This was the result of a very detailed ex...

Hi Sorry I can't help, there is no G Wilson in my admittedly rather ancient list of members in respect of the booklets CD. However Jean Alexander and/or Ian Harvey would be a good bet. Not sure if I'm allowed to give Ian's email address on this Board, but it's on the GBPS Programme card. As to the S...

6d Machin definitive

Following the discovery of a small PO file from their Materials Section within which some of the material addressed the fugitive ink found on some used examples of the 6d, I'm looking closely at the 6d Machin definitive stamp. It is probably a faint hope, as most of us will have disposed of such sta...

Wilding watermarks

This is I am sure a very simple question, but could someone enlighten me as to why there had to be three successive different watermarks on the wilding definitives?

James If I can remember (it's an age thing), I'll bring along the colour trial originals to Munster which might add a bit of interest to the article. I sympathise with anyone translating specialised philatelic articles, although we might not think so, it is a rather peripheral activity with probably...

I saw this post, an old one of two years ago, and two of us from the 'Northeast Mafia' went to Munster for the philatelic weekend, and had a very enjoyable time. It's coming up again at the end of September this year, and it would be good to see more GBPS members there. We can travel to Cologne from...

Hi Everyone You all make collecting sound so complicated. I don't think it is. Philately is an entirely voluntary pursuit, at least for the collectors, and as such we can collect what we like and how we like, governed only by the depth of our pockets. The latter will always be a bone of contention o...

I know this thread relates to the Wilding 6d value, but maybe the 6d pre-decimal value also has a relevance. I recently acquired a 'study' undertaken by the Materials Section of the PO back in 1968/70, into the inks used on this value, which may well have been the same inks used on the Wildings. I u...

I have seen Steve McGill's Machin display in the flesh so to speak, 10 frames I recall at Chicago last year. The information and analysis they demonstrated, of a highly complex issue were quite extraordinary. Far too concentrated for a competitive exhibit where there is little time to inwardly diges...

Hello Robin You're a right old cynic, although I do agree with some of your observations, and those in the thread above. I looked very closely at the Rules and Guidance for International competition as set out in the FIP booklet. They certainly do not mark competitive entries according to their own ...

It is only a couple of days since my piece on the FIP Guidelines appeared on the Discussion Board, and I have received three responses. 1) That of Ray Simpsons is self explanatory 2) To Robin Tibbenham I would say that although 128 sheets for an international exhibit sounds a lot, if one is to cover...

By the way what am I supposed to type in the 'Quote' box above ? I notice I am not the only tentative user of this Discussion Board, and I see Robin has generated a number of duplicates - are they for sale Robin ? On the matter of coils - for the interest of davecox and Robin T. As Robin mentioned I...

I've enlarged the image, and as you say, there is a significant vertical flaw throgh the eye. Have you checked there is no damage to the paper, like a scratch? I assume there isn't. The cancellation is November 1967, about 5 months after the 4d. sepia stamp was issued, so it will have been the very ...
