Re: Values as per County Catalogues

Thank you Winston. I actually already have the Midlands catalogue, but the values shown in that book are very little different to the earlier books. In fact almost identical to the London volume released in 1983. This is what made me wonder whether values were in fact declining quite steeply in real...

Values as per County Catalogues

I am a GBPH collector based in Australia, so I am a little out of touch as to current prices for PH material. I have a good deal of literature including a set of the County Catalogues, but of course these are now 40 years old and so the value guides are somewhat out of date. Is there a view as to a ...

Registered Book Post to Australia

This registered envelope containing Law Papers arrived in Launceston in January 1884, so would have been posted in late 1883, although the dates of the cancellations are unclear. It bears a fourpenny brown and 6d overprinted stamps - 10 pence in all. Could anyone please enlighten me as to how this 1...

Hotel cachets with Post Paid mark incorporated

I have a twopenny Mulready cover mailed from Dublin to Belfast in 1840. It bears an oval Imperial Hotel cachet with "Post-Paid" in the centre. I haven't seen a hotel cachet with reference to post paid in it before (but I haven't seen many). Does anyone know if this was an official Post Off...

halfpenny lilac postcard

I have a postcard (image attached below), used in January 1878, that is perforated on three sides. I haven't been able to find any reference in literature to the perforation of postcards at this time, other than that they could be purchased in sheets. Is it likely that the sheets were perforated or ...

Welsh additional halfpenny rate

I have a cover, sent in October 1839 from a village in Waterford, Ireland (with a Clonmel date stamp)to London. It is rated one shilling and threepence halfpenny which seems to about right for a letter going on the Waterford to Milford Haven packet, including the halfpenny charge for the Milford Rd ...

Transfer from previous board: original post 1625

Hi James - I'm not an expert on this, but I have a book " Postal Cancellations of London" by H C Westley which shows, in the chapter on the East Central District Office, a cancellation similar to yours ( I'm assuming your cancellation has bars that are over inked and therefore not possible...

thanks for this response. I am located in Australia, so not many people to discuss this with here! I have had another look at the letter and note that there was a place near Chepstow named Porthskewett. I think this is the place of origin of the letter, not Portsmouth - writing not easy to read! One...

Cross post - help re rate

This letter of 1793, sent from Chepstow to Highworth in Wiltshire ( not very far), is rated 5 and is inscribed "X post". The letter was written in Portsmouth, but of course that doesn't mean it was mailed from there. But I have read that a mail coach cross post between Portsmouth and Brist...

I am looking for info on the three pence "British Empire" postcard issued in the 1890s. It is rarely seen used and I believe it was intended for use to Australia and NZ, but although I have lived in Aus for 40 years I have never seen one used to that destination. I have two commercially us...
