Railway sub-offices
I'm trying to confirm the precise dates these started and ended. The article on the Railway Philatelic Group website says "The first ever Railway Sub Office was created in 1855 at Braco (Perthshire)" and "On 1 August 1905 all former Railway Sub Offices were re-designated simply as ord...

Re: Foreign Office handstamps Outward Letters
I do have evidence that the number relates to the date and hope to have published a short article on this but would be interested to know if anybody knows of any publication indicating a different view or which might render my proposed article redundant.

Foreign Office handstamps Outward Letters
Not something I collect so a query about those normally applied between 1797 and 1836. According to my copy of the first edition of the County Catalogue these have Foreign Office or Foreign or F and the year (either in full or the last two figures) together with a number. The catalogue states that t...

I believe the S & H refers to the Suburban & Home sorting division, the SE to the South Eastern, and the GE to the Great Eastern. I don't know what the GB refers to but wonder whether it is a badly struck GE. Other sorting divisions include North Western, Midland, South Western and Great Wes...

Re: Help with Taunton Parcel Post Label used December 1900 please
The most recent book which includes coverage of parcel post labels in some depth is "The Parcel Post of the United Kingdom including Crown Dependencies" by Dr W.M.Melrose and N.J.P.Wraith. Volume 1 has been published which deals with the labels while Volume 2 will deal with ancillary label...

Re: The Post Office Daily Packet list / Ship Letter Office for 1850s.
You may be able to obtain the information you want from appropriate newspapers for the period. The British Newspaper Archive has Lloyds List which has shipping information and may have other papers which include such. You would have to subscribe unless you are a member of a library which has a subsc...

The Postal Museum catalogue seems to indicate they have copies for the period concerned

Re: Irish Charities Concessionary Postage Rate
I actually read the 1819 Act as charging an initial 1d in total for up to 12 items and then if there are extra items 1d for each further complete 12 and if the total number isn't divisible by 12 a 1d for the remainder.
A copy of the Act is on this website under the name Post Office (Ireland) Act 1819.

Re: Postal Routing mystery
Certainly for Central London a late fee seems to relate to letters posted after the normal closing time in the evening but elsewhere where there were departures of the mails during the daytime a late fee might be payable if a letter was posted shortly before the relevant mail departed.

Whites 1848 Essex Directory does say for Chingford "Letters received and despatched twice a-day" so the fee might relate to a letter posted in the morning.

Could the extra 1d, making the postage 2d, be a late fee? As far as I can judge from the picture the envelope is a small one.

My understanding is that the reference to Tibet relates to the Indian postal agencies in Tibet which were only transferred to the Chinese on 11th April 1955. The January 1936 UK Post Office Guide states the agencies were at Gyantse Pharijong and Yatung (Chumbi)

Re: Book post (newspaper) to Germany 1880
Thanks Maurice for pointing out the error in the Treasury Warrant date - I had looked at the correct Warrant but when I posted must have glanced too quickly at the list of Warrants. May I suggest that you add the rate for Newspapers to UPU countries for the period 1875 to end of 1891 after which it ...

In a letter to postmasters dated 30th October 1820 Francis Freeling said:; "And I am to direct you, in every case, to mark the Rates of Postage plainly and legibly on all Letters: and that such as are Post-paid may be invariably marked with Red Ink." I think this was a reminder not an init...

The position is even more complicated than shown on on Stamp Boards (thanks for pointing it out). A provisional list of relevant dates below. I haven't come across a note on the introduction of the requirement about letters sent by midday merely a statement that it existed. Early 1847 – letters left...

Re: Book post (newspaper) to Germany 1880
The rates to Germany at this period would be the rates applicable to mail to UPU countries . For this item the printed paper rate of 1/2d would apply - the newspaper rate was higher. See the guide to rates on this website and the relevant Treasury Warrant 29.5.1879. For the reduction of postage on n...
