I am not sure when SG changed the catalogue numbers. Just checked my 1941 edition number 10 has remained unchanged but in the old book 9a was 10/- cobalt now 9c and 10c was ultramarine on blued paper now 9d. Cobalt on white was not catalogued at the time.

The point is though whether they have to be white to count. I think yes - have enclosed a cover with 3 white fours.

On QV the white areas are white. Here they are missing the shading but have been coloured in so presumably do not count as white.

all quite fascinating and thanks for the input. I had the stamp looked at by a couple of people during the Festival in London and the comments were very similar. The stamp passed on to another friend who collects Levant as an oddity.

Hi Denis, airmail rate at the time from 1939 was 5/- for the first ounce, then 2/6d and 1/3d so 4 ounces or 100g. Sample post was only cheaper if sent surface mail which would have taken longer than 2 weeks
