Hello folks,

Hello, :)

Here are two KEVII stamps that show the QV "White 4" in 2 corners variety, as listed and illustrated in SG Queen Victoria Specialized.

A friend brought to my attention a brief blurb about this in the April 2008 Catalogue Column- Gibbons Stamp Monthly. All it says is that this flaw is listed for the QV Jubilee but not for the KEVII. Does anyone know the reasoning behind this, or are flaws from some QV Jubilee stamps generally accepted on the KEVII version?

I look forward to any and all feedback, Thanks! :)

Here are enlarged images of the areas in question on the first stamp.

And similar scans of the second stamp with the purple cancel.

Again, I appreciate any and all feedback and thank you for your time!

Kind Regards,

Skilo

On QV the white areas are white. Here they are missing the shading but have been coloured in so presumably do not count as white.

Wiseman reports in his 'DLR Years' that the white 4s are not what he calls true plate varieties but due to print room problems in make-ready. He writes in QV context but he also studied Jubilees through KEVII. Many QV Jubilee varieties run on through KEVII.
Back to white 4s: I have seen many QV 4d and there is a variation on the extent of white area from fully white to parts of shading showing. This fits with poor inking of the plate. Your KEVII shown look consistent with what can be seen on QV printings.

The point is though whether they have to be white to count. I think yes - have enclosed a cover with 3 white fours.

I agree, to be the catalogue variety "white 4" they have to be white and not with some part shading ink.
And what a great example on cover :D

Reg Powell had two KEVII examples (see below) but I believe only these two on chalky paper, none on ordinary paper. The QV examples are what I have in my collection.

I've always thought that this variety was a printing, not a plate, variety; rather like the Downey Head no cross on crowns, probably due to faulty make-ready rather than to any flaw or weakness in the plate.
