Any ideas on this dumb cancel?

Post by Andy Donaldson »

Hi All,

I have this undated KGVI cover bearing a 1951 (new colours) 2d & ½d tied by a large boxed "X" (with dots on 3 sides of the cross) "dumb" cancel.

Does anybody recognise this cancel as I can't find anything similar in any books I have and difficult to search online as no idea what I am really looking for!

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks,

Andy

New one on me as well, I'm afraid. It doesn't look like anything else I've seen that I can remember.

Mackay's Postmarks of England and Wales illustration 6263 is vaguely the same cross-and-dots pattern, albeit much thicker and with no surrounding box, but that was stated to be a military postmark.

Thanks Maurice. If you haven't seen it either then I don't feel too stupid for not recognising it :D

I don't have Mackay's book but I'll be in the Royal on Tuesday, so if I get time I will look it up.

I'll also be taking it to the GBPS meeting on Saturday as part of my contribution so hopefully someone there might recognise it.

See you Saturday.

Thanks,

Andy
