What’s your recommendation on Albums please

Post by Ianbutton777 »

Good morning
I’m in the process of juggling my collection around and would appreciate any members recommendations regarding stamp albums please. As these will hold my collection for hopefully the next 20 plus years (fingers crossed) an attractive and high quality album is a must, thank you in advance. Ian

Hi Ian,
I use ringbound loose leaf albums with Hagner or Prinz acid free sheets. I prefer pages that lay flat when opened. I would not recommend Stanley Gibbons Avon, or the Davo
range because they are plastic and will tear and distort over time.
There is a company called SAFE Albums (UK) Ltd. who claim to sell the best in the world
They use acid free paper free of plasticizers that are inert and free of stearates, that have been scientifically tested and patented. They have been given only good reviews and have been trading for a substantial time.
I dont know if im allowed to give you their contact details, but they have a website and are easy to find on the internet.

Thank you for your reply, I have been looking on the Safe website recently and they do seem to have good albums, I appreciate your advice and think I’ll give the ring bound a try. My previous albums have been springback and peg fitted but obviously you need to remove pages to study properly.
Once again thank you

Hi Ian, thanks for your reply,
i hope others can input any suggestions, there must be many members who have bought
albums over the years. I bought some of mine second hand at a very good discount.
My collection is really for study so i didnt want to go overboard with the cost. I have noticed a luxury album today costing about £350 pounds. If you have a large collection
it can get a little expensive.

Ian Hi

Just seen your post. I think this is a dilemma many have been faced with. My recommendation would be to avoid buying albums altogether and instead use individual sheets of paper and Exhibition protectors and store the finished product in boxes.

If you are computer literate so much the better. Some good results can be produced using basic Microsoft Word (or similar) program and once created and saved individual pages can be easily re-printed if a mistake has been made or further information or items need to be added to a page. There are of course a number of specialist software programs for the more proficient, ranging from publishing programs to Stamp Album page programs. Prices range from Free to £100’s or even £1000’s.

Although it is possible to print onto non-standard sized pages, I would recommend that you stick to standard A4 and or A3 sizes. Even if most of a collection is on A4, A3 can be very handy if you have any large sized covers or stamp blocks to be housed. It is also relatively easy to obtain archival quality exhibition protectors in both sizes.
Using individual pages rather than formal albums also prevents you becoming a “Hostage to fortune” in so far as many Album producers of even 20 years ago are no longer in business and even some of the stalwarts such as Gibbons remove products from the range. If you go down the loose page route the only thing you have to worry about is a continuing supply of A4 paper.

On this point Acid free is readily available and always likely to be so. However, there are 100’s of different shades of White or Cream! While fancy shades of cream or similar may appeal to your own tastes you don’t want to end up in 5- or 10-years’ time with a collection which is on 20 different shades of white either, so selecting a paper which is acid free, of the right thickness and likely to be readily available to last out your collecting days is a further consideration.

If using a computer to generate your pages do remember to keep a computer file copy of all your pages so you can easily produce further copies or edits. It is also good practice to retain a back-up copy of your files and to re-save/update the page files every year or two as the programs used to produce them also change and in 10 years’ time the latest version of “Word” may not be able to open a 10- or 15-year-old file.

Just my tuppence worth, hope its of help.

Happy new year to all

Simon

Hi Simon

Thank you for your reply,

Yes using individual sheets and computer software is definitely an option I’ve been considering.
I have actually bought a few albums (and a couple of hundred extra pages) although at the moment I have only started putting my secondary collection into these and not my main collection.

The loose page route wasn’t really in my thoughts originally as I’m not thinking of exhibiting in the near future but as you explain it does seem to future proof the issue of a mish-mash of albums and pages!
Well it’s always exciting to have a new project to look forward to

Once again thank you for you reply

All the best for 2023
Ian
