AIRLETTER INFO

Post by MIKE »

A most likely very silly question but from when and most importantly from where were the Olympic airletters on sale - presumably all post offices given the cancellation dates (FDC) and the areas postmarked. Many thanks Mike

Yep, all post offices, same day as the stamps. Post Office Circular, 30th June 1948:

OLYMPIC GAMES

Issue of Commemorative Stamps

A special issue of postage stamps of 2½d., 3d., 6d., and 1s. denominations, and air letters bearing a replica of the special 6d. adhesive stamp, is being made to mark the occasion of the Olympic Games to be held in this country commencing on the 29th of July, 1948. The stamps will be available in sheet form only, and will be double size – 120 to the sheet. The air letters will be in packets of 100.

The stamps and air letters must be put on sale at all Post Offices at the hour of opening for public business on Thursday the 29th of July, and in order that the distribution of initial supplies may be made, requisitions should be submitted forthwith – and in any case not later than the 9th of July – by all Provincial Head Offices and by London District, Branch, and Sub-Offices to the Stores Department (Stamp Section), 91/99, Pentonville Road, London N.1., or Russell Road, Edinburgh, 12, as the case may be. The usual requisition forms – P 938B for stamps and P 2308G for air letters – should be used, suitably amended and clearly marked “OLYMPIC GAMES”. NO OTHER ITEMS SHOULD BE INCLUDED.

The quantities requisitioned should be determined as follows:–

2½d. stamps – on the basis of the first week’s sales of the 2½d. Royal Silver Wedding stamps.
3d., 6d., and 1s. stamps – on the basis of three week’s normal sales.
6d. air letters – on the basis of two week’s normal sales.

Special provision of 3d., 6d., and 1s. stamps and 6d. air letters should also be made at offices in localities where visitors to the Games are likely to resort, or for known large requirements of dealers.

In preparing requisitions it should be borne in mind that the special stamps will be in sheets of 120, value:–

2½d. … … … … … £1 5s. 0d. per sheet
3d. … … … … … £1 10s. 0d. per sheet
6d. … … … … … £3 0s. 0d. per sheet
1s. … … … … … £6 0s. 0d. per sheet

A further notice on the subject will appear later.
