1814 Sterling Cover
I picked up this 1814 cover to start filling in my rate gaps in my collection, with a Sterling Mileage mark 45 ---"E" , I think it is an E for Edinburgh. The 7 1.2 postage matches the 45 miles to it destination. I must be having a bad day today as i cant make out this handwriting to find o...

Re: Crown Handstamp on 1834 cover
Winston, thanks for that pointer, although it has brought me to a another level of confusion in trying to decipher what is in that book. It appears that this stamp is Fig 11 and has a single letter in this case 'C". When I look at the 1834 table I only see two letter options. I must admit to be...

Inland Branch List
I have a 6d 1797 cover to Cambridgeshire with a double ring receiving stamp on the back. It is dated Nov 24, 1797 and being double ring was sent in the evening and according to Hendy the letter to the left "F", denotes the inland branch at which is was received. I have looked at my London ...

That makes sense, thanks.
Where can I find a reference for the Crown inspector marks. I looked in my books but I did not find any hand stamps like that crown?

Crown Handstamp on 1834 cover
Picked up this cover as it intrigued me with a crown handstamp. 1834 Dec 1 Front.jpg 1834 Dec 1 Back.jpg It is from 1834 from Liverpool to London. It is 2 receiving marks on back, on from Liverpool on Dec 1st 1834 and London receiving mark on Dec 3, 1834.(I assume the C at the top means the central ...

Missing Scottish Tax
I have a 1824 5d cover from Dunfermline to Edinburgh. The 5d rate is correct for the distance, however it does not have a 1/2d stamp added for the Scottish tax. I do see what looks like a small '2' next to the 5. Could that be a lazy '1/2" ? On the back is a two line Dunfermline mark with some ...

Re: T.P. Walworth Postmark
So was the use of these old pre-1840 hand stamps an authorized cancellation or was it just used by the office.
Your explanation of Morning vs Evening. do you have a reference for this that I could obtain or read as I am really interested in these details.

T.P. Walworth Postmark
I have a nice 1d imperf mourning cover with a Maltese cross 7 cancel dated May 13 1843 on back. I am confused by the T.P. Walworth postmark on front. I have seen that type on stampless covers, but this is the first time I have come across this on a stamped cover. In going through an old version of W...

Unpaid Stampless Letters
I have a number of pre-1840 stampless letters which I have researched distance and rates on, but it got me to thinking about unpaid examples which would have been charged double the rate.
Are there any specific markings that would denote this on a letter?

Early London Post Receiving houses vs boxes
Hope someone can help me. I am trying to summarize an early history of the post office as an introduction for a postal history exhibit I am doing locally here in Phoenix, AZ. In Hendy's Early Postmarks of the British Isles he notes that In 1677 there were 8 receiving houses listed which grew to 44 i...

Extra 1/2 franking
I have this cover from 1838 marked 8d from the Bank of Scotland so I am assuming that is Edinburgh, to Paisley which is 62 miles. The 8d matches the 50-80 mile band rate for 1838. Why I am confused is the "Add 1/2" mark. The 1812 rate shows an additional 1/2d for Scotland but not in the 18...

Re: SG152 with NP postmark
Thanks, I found that reference in my post mark book once i new what to look for, a London F/NPB. The 4d would cover the 12oz rate letter rate unless newspapers were sent at a lower rate. Maybe somebody was ordering "The Times" from London to be shipped somewhere!

SG152 with NP postmark
I have a nice used copy of SG152 with a NP postmark, I think there is a D on top of the NP but cant be sure. I was wondering if this was the New Plymouth postmark? I have not found examples to compare it too.

Perforation Type E Diagram
I could well be blind, but in going through Appendix I of SG's Vol4 Part 1, I see diagrams of all the perforators, but I do not see a diagram for Type "E'. Did I miss it? If some has one I could really use a version the same as the others for my presentation.
Thanks in advance.

Have a peculiar cover that a friend of mine gave me to add to my GB cover collection. It is one I have never seen before. QEII Stampless Cover
I picked up this cover at a local show as it intrigued me. It has no stamps, only 1 and a half Post paid marks on a cover to the USA.
Why no stamps? I thought that wasn't allowed for general postage.
