AFAIK these old pre-1840 handstamps were issued to the receiving offices by the Post Office but were never intended to be used as cancellations (although a few offices did so use them). 'T.P' does mean twopence; the handstamp was originally used in the London Twopenny Post, which became the London District Post. After the reforms of 1839/40, many old Penny Post and Twopenny Post handstamps were kept in use as namestamps, as in this case. Your letter was posted at the Walworth recei...

There was an earlier book, Numbered Postmarks of Scotland (1967) by James Douglas, but Mackay's work probably supersedes it. Both books give the recorded dates of use of all the Scottish numerals but Douglas gives only the year; Mackay the full dates. Mackay's book is quite comprehensive, although n...

Hi William,
Yes, the Leeds 447 1844C dated SEPT1845 in Parmenter (Vol. 6, p. 152) looks correct, and consistent with a Plate 61 stamp (put to press in Aug. 1845), which is what I believe your stamp is.

As far as I can gather from Wiseman (DLRY2, pp. 351–362) and the TPM (was BPMA), the 4½d was printed 320-set from 160-set head plates (combined with eight 20-set duty plates). This resulted in left and right sheets of 160 each. But I can find no mention of the size of PO counter sheets. Akerman (GBJ...
