Re: Red "5" handstamp on cover to NZ via Panama
The normal convention at this time was that if the marking is Red then it's something paid and in Black then it's something due - doesn't help with your query though.

The Parmenter book that Maurice referenced earlier has a very brief explanation on page 66 about the blue thimble mark.

Re: Postage Rates via Marseilles 1857-1880 (to New Zealand)
You don't say what cancels are on the item but if it has any of the double cancels of 45/45 to 49/49 and/or a small blue thimble on the reverse(used for evening despatch) then it's probably a Late Fee paid.

Re: Labelling Collections
I think the answer to that is it depends on what you are showing and why. If it is just a complete set with no special feature then the individual items would be self-explanatory so just label the set. If there are unique or rare items or items of special note then by all means label them to highlig...

Re: Labelling Collections
I do exactly the same as Mozzerb. I use Word to format the pages and use whatever font and size is appropriate for the item that is being displayed, then insert any additional images as required. Don't use any fancy font or size as it detracts from the display, after all you are showing the philatel...

Twin Obliterators
I have copies of the twin 45 and 46 obliterators normally used on late fee mail but have come across this cover which appears to have a twin upright 48 London Chief Office obliterator. Can anyone help as to whether this is known or just two cancels perfectly aligned? The cover does have the normal s...

The cover has 6 x SG43 1d Reds with a manuscript annotation of Bonny River in one corner. I can post a picture if this helps with any answers.

I have the issues you are interested in, I also have both the Penny Red covers discussed in the article of September 1975 as well as the original letter and reply from Robert Wiggins. If you want scans of any of the material then let me know.

Victorian Mail Steamers
Can anyone help with information concerning Victorian mail steamers that collected mail from the west coast of Africa. I have a cover from a navy ship of the West African Squadron that was picked up from Bonny River on November 3rd 1871, probably the MS Roquelle, and would like to confirm what mail ...
