could well be encroachment; the top marginal perf does not seem to be in skew with the stamp perfs. I only collect used controlsand mostly singles, so have no comparisons...

Is there a definitive answer, whether the GVI £1 stamps were only valid until 29.02.1972 or are they still valid like the early EII Castles? Interesting! The "joined" S & T appears on all my inverted watermark versions but not on upright watermark copies. The other bits are probably just foreign bodies on the plate, which should have been noticed but do not qualify as errors, methinks.

The frame break on the 4d 46th conference stamp is catalogued as W8b and has been for many years, latest version with a cat price of £35 versus 40p for the normal stamp. Robin, if only! On cover I find E8R and Tudor Crown the most difficult to see. Holding up at an angle to a good North light is still the best. If you are talking just stamps, should not be that difficult, acetate tray with lighter fluid should show the watermark. Dates do not really help except for ...

1½d hair flaw
This variety is listed as P3b on cylinder 2 no dot on the stamp next to the control. I just discovered what I thought must be this variety on an FDC but am unsure as the b/w picture in the 4 Kings shows the strand of hair at a slightly different position. Can anyone confirm or otherwise?

Mike, I do not think the types have anything to do with whether they are left, middle or right. All watermarks at that time were still to be found in different places. The differences are in the shape of the letters but it would certainly help if there were better real pictures of these in the liter...

Manfred, this is a standard slogan postmark first used I think 1937 and then regularly. Presumably just an attempt at better efficiency but nothing really to do with late fees or too late aspects.
