Like most collectors I suppose, I always thought a backstamp was a CDS or similar cache that had been stamped by hand on the reverse side of a cover, usually at the receiving sorting office. Imagine my surprise when – while sorting through a shoebox of 1937 KGVI Coronation material untouched since being obtained some 50 years ago, I came across the stamp shown here. At first glance I too it to be a superb offset. But it is mint, with full gum, and appears to be a genuine variant of the 1937 Coronation stamp presumably designed and produced for use on the back of a cover.

Very nice Robin,
As a matter of interest, do I detect a 'shoulder retouch' on the King?
It will probably have to be listed in the
'back of the book' area.
That should make a good impression but not as striking as the one illustrated here!
Regards.
Ron.
