I have recently acquired a GPO handout, PL62, advertising the Empire Air Mail Scheme. On its opening page it proclaims that the third stage of the scheme is now in operation and lists the countries or territories where first class mail now goes by air.
The list includes many familiar names (although I admit I had to google Fanning Island) BUT WHAT THE HECK IS TIBET DOING IN THERE?

I hadn't noticed that either -- after a bit of Googling, maybe related to this? New to me too!mike.mood@talktalk.net wrote:BUT WHAT THE HECK IS TIBET DOING IN THERE?

Thanks for this response. The link is certainly a very interesting historical footnote, but still leaves questions.
Re: Empire Air Mail Scheme
My understanding is that the reference to Tibet relates to the Indian postal agencies in Tibet which were only transferred to the Chinese on 11th April 1955. The January 1936 UK Post Office Guide states the agencies were at Gyantse Pharijong and Yatung (Chumbi)
