CASTLE STREET Postmark?

Post by Richudson »

I assume the partial Postmark relates to 'CASTLE STREET', if so can anyone tell me where the street is? For some reason I seem to recollect Edinburgh, would that be correct and if so why was it used in preference to the normal '131' strike?
Any help would be welcome.
Thanks,
Richard.

Yes, Castle Street, Edinburgh, a Scots Local.

You can see a complete strike here https://www.barrell.co.uk/products/108151

Scots Local postmarks were in use in place of usual numeral postmarks from 1854 onwards to about 1860.

The most comprehensive book in the GBPS library is this one:
R. C. ALCOCK, Scots Local Cancellations Illustrated 1854‑1860. Cheltenham: R. C. Alcock Ltd, 1984. 124pp.
