When was QV 1880 1d Venetian Red invalidated for postage ?

Post by leamphil »

I have a 1938 cover bearing an 1880 1d venetian red which was marked as "stamp inadmissable" and charged postage due.

I've seen reference to the London Gazette of 19th April 1901 (https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/iss ... /page/2719) which seems to be primarily aimed at invalidating "postage and revenue" stamps for revenue duty (starting with the 1881 1d lilac which was the first issued with "postage and revenue" rather than just "postage").

I've also found reference to QV stamps being invalidated from 1st July 1915 but have not found the original source of this.

Can anyone please help me determine when the 1880 1d Venetian Red was invalidated for postage (was it 1st July 1915 ?), and point me at the original source of this invalidation ?

Have you looked in the GB Journal? There were some articles on this including by Douglas Muir I believe. (I’m on holiday at present so a bit awkward to check). Best wishes, Mike

Thanks Mike, found it (Volume 40 No.4 from July/August 2002).

Douglas Muir's article points at The London Gazette from 21st May 1915, in addition to the one from 1901 (and a further notice on 28 February 1930).

My reading of the two notices in The London Gazette with reference to the 1880 1d Venetian red postage stamp, is that the first notice from 1901 does not apply as the 1880 stamp is "postage" not "postage and revenue", and thus that the second notice from 1915 applies.

This would invalidate the 1880 1d Venetian Red from 1st July 1915.

Comments please !

As you were !

Rereading the 1901 notice properly, it says that all stamps prior to the 1881 "postage and revenue" stamps are invalidated from 1st June 1901.

So the 1880 1d Venetian Red was invalid from 1st June 1901.
