Partial postal town name finder

Post by JohnPhil »

Might anyone know if the postmark/post town name finder tool below is still available somewhere? The link given doesn't appear to be accessible.

Have you ever wondered about which town a partial CDS came from? For the Victorian Period of Great Britain ... here's a chance to find out.

[By the way - in case it's important to someone - I noticed that the time of posting of this message is showing as 10 pm, whereas I'm actually posting it at 9 pm GMT.]

As far as I can tell, the towns finder is now gone. I'm not sure if anyone has a copy of the database for it.

A close replacement is the GB post offices list on this site:

https://www.gbps.org.uk/tools/ukpo

It's not quite the same thing as the towns finder, as that was based on actual postmarks seen, but on the other hand it's more comprehensive as it doesn't require someone to submit a postmark and so has the obscure offices too.

(Good spot on the timezone btw -- the default was set to UTC+1, not sure why, hadn't noticed that. I've reset it to Europe/London, which should handle daylight savings time. Unfortunately, most accounts will have picked up the old default, although I've changed yours -- and mine -- to Europe/London.)

Thank you for the 'pointer' to the 'ukpo' tool (and for the timezone fix).
