Neopost Meter Mark "Specimen" Impressions (1927-59)

Introduction

According to A.A. Dewey and John C. Mann, a Meter Stamp (Mark) is the impression denoting prepayment of postage made by a franking machine (FM) which prints the "Stamp" as required and records on a meter the amount expended. Great Britain had official trials for FMs as early as 1912, but the first FM was licensed and used in Great Britain in 1922 and divided into 8 basic designs by the collectors (A,B,C,D,E,F,G and H). At the beginning, there were only a few FM manufacturers in Great Britain and Roneo‑Neopost Ltd (originally founded as British Neopost Ltd.in 1924) was one of them, which produced 1st FM in 1925. Jack Peach stated that on 24 March 1925, 1st Neopost machine (a prototype of a small rotary type of machine) was granted licence by the Post Office.

In May 1925, the Post Office suggested that the frank numbers should include the letter 'N' as a distinguish ing feature. On 20 July 1925 the necessary approval was given. The first user licenses were granted to a few companies on 22 July 1925. The complete meter mark consists of at least two, and often three, distinct sections, which are from right to left: 1) the Frank, 2} the Townmark (or called Datestamp) and 3) the Slogan (optionally).

In this exhibit, the exhibitor would like to show you some Neopost meter marks specimens for "Stamp‑like" (or Crown & Cypher Type) designs with Royal cyphers "G v R" (Design B), "E VIII R" (Design C), "G VI R" (Design D) and "E II R " (Design E) from 1927 to 1959. As the exhibit is only one frame of 16 pages, so the exhibitor could not discuss too much about other designs and areas, and only concentrate on Neopost Meter Mark "specimen" of "Stamp‑like" designs with or without Slogans between 1927 and 1959. It is the exhibitor's hope that the audiences can get a rough idea of these four designs by the below exhibit.
